Security bollards protect Switzerland’s largest train station

It’s no coincidence that Zurich’s main train station is the largest in Switzerland: around 461,000 people use or pass through its halls every day. To better protect people from vehicular attacks, Consel recently installed bollards with impact loads, so-called safety bollards, on behalf of the Swiss Federal Railways SBB. These protect the two roadside entrances to the cross hall.

The challenges

• Access should be granted if necessary
• Low installation depth – retractable bollards not feasible
• Barrier elements must not restrict the flow of people

The solution: removable safety bollards

• a sophisticated concept – specially developed for SBB by Consel
• reinforced flat foundations with a depth of 250mm for the installation of the bollards
• interconnected foundations for optimal force absorption
• removable bollards with special steel for highest impact load

The solution is convincing not only technically, but also from an architectural point of view. This is because the high-security bollards equipped with stainless steel jackets blend in perfectly with the modern surroundings. They convey security without appearing martial.
