Access control with bollards has proven its worth
Since 2016, a bollars from Consel have been regulating the access routes on Basle’s Spalenberg. This pilot project was initiated to test the functionality and acceptance of the system and at the same time to make the city centre safer and more pedestrian-friendly.
Another four bollard systems for access control
In the meantime, the city’s Department of Construction and Transport has drawn a positive balance and decided to regulate access to the city centre with four more bollard systems – in collaboration with Consel. The first system on Freie Strasse is currently under construction and will be put into operation at the beginning of December. Further bollard systems will be installed in several stages on Kasernenstrasse, Stadthausgasse and Rittergasse by Basel Fasnacht 2026. The existing pilot system on Spalenberg will also be modernised and adapted to the new technical requirements.

Wide range of operating options
The users’ requirements for operating the bollards are extremely varied. Residents, hotel guests, tradespeople and emergency services require specific access routes. The operating methods used are therefore correspondingly diverse:
- 2 radio receivers
- QR code reader
- 3 different key switches for 1x lowering, permanent lowering, permanent raising and convoy switching
- Video and intercom stations with server
- Licence plate recognition
- Smart kit for easy management of authorisations
All operating elements are integrated in the operating column – with the exception of the licence plate recognition. This is located in a separate signal column.
The solution
Mix of automatically retractable and fixed bollards
The city of Basel has opted for reinforced bollards from our own urbanstar brand. These not only serve to regulate access, but also fulfil a protective function. The automatically retractable bollards are supplemented by fixed / stationary bollards to limit the width of the passageway at the sides. The selected bollards:
- Reinforced urbanstar bollards, height 600
- Top-View bollard heads (lateral and upward illumination)
- Low-noise lowering thanks to special shock absorbers
- Adaptation to road inclination (in two directions)
- Access control even in the event of a power failure
The UPS (uninterruptible power supply with battery), which is installed in a separate, free-standing control cabinet, ensures continuous operation of the systems.
